Sir Henry Halford's 1888 book, The Art of Shooting with the Rifle is a good read, with contemporary information on long range shooting with black powder rifles.

Ditto on the Halford book - but what really works is practice, and then some more practice.  Reading the wind is probably the most frustrating and difficult aspect of LR BP rifle shooting...  Well, for me at least!  Embarrassed

Get used to keeping a good score record, ie estimating the wind and recording where your shot has gone. Its tedious to start with but it does get you reading the wind.
