Calisher & Terry carbine ammunition
Jul 15th, 2009 at 8:18am

Hi Folks, I just wanted to ask if any of the members here had any information on ammunition for the Calisher & Terry carbine I am looking for the specifications of the components in the cartridges they used as I have a mate coming to Sydney on saturday to pick one up from a dealer and we would like to know more about them as he is going to have it on display and give a talk about it at various events in the future, Regards, Peter B.

I found the following in the December 1964 edition of the MLAGBs 'Black Powder' magazine.
================
"Terry's cartridge was made of nitrated brown paper, secured behind the powder. At this end is glued a tallow saturated wad, designed to remove fouling and also create a gas check - for the explosion takes place from the centre, not at the end, of the cartridge; the percussion nipple is therefore situated  mid-way along the chamber. The nipple itself tapers from a wide mouth to normal size. "By being so formed," wrote Terry, "a greater explosion power is obtained to burst the carridge and ignite the charge."

After firing, the wad remains in the barrel, ready to be forced forwards by the next cartridge. A bullet of the same design and weight as for the .577 Enfield was used, .54" nominal.
================

I also have an unsigned manuscript from the MLAGB  archives ""Small Arms of the British Service, 1866" which says under the heading "Terry's Breech-Loading Carbine."
================
Ammnition, special. Pritchett bullet, weight 530 grs; diameter .568; length .953in; charge of powder 2 drms.
================

There's conflicting information on the bullet diameter but I hope this helps.

Hi David, thanks for that interesting information it will give us a starting point. My mate Kelvin (another M/L nut!) has arrived in Sydney tonight and is going to look at and buy the carbine tomorrow if it is workable so we will be studying it tomorrow night looks like a fun and interesting project, we will keep you posted, Regards, Peter B.

P.S. Is that you on Facebook?

Hi, this is what he picked up on Saturday morning it has N.S.W. markings which he was really pleased with and the rack number 144 with the customary broad arrow and has an excellent bore and good sound action etc.

...

...

...

...

...

What we wondering about is the slot in the action which would runs alongside where the cartridge would sit, is it for helping to remove unfired/spent cartridge remains? Regards, Peter B.

There appears to be both a slot in the bolt and the 'reciever body'. Do the two marry up when the action is closed? No sure why though?

Hi David, yes the keyway in the bolt body and the slot in the reciever body do marry up when the action is closed and we cannot see any reason for them being there so I was hoping someone here can shed a little light on this mystery as we can only think of the above mentioned reason's for the one in the reciever body, Regards, Peter B.
