Where to purchase paper patched bullets sized .448
Mar 16th, 2010 at 11:15am

I purchased some .448 PP Match Grade, 50-1, 540 grs bullets from Joe at Cunard's and they shoot like a dream at 300 metres.( I also have some other PP bullets from Cunard that mike .449 and they are very hard to load and, I suspect, tear the paper; they go wherever they want! What a difference .oo1 make in the Gibbs!) Until Joe is well again I don't have a supply of bullets but I would love to duplicate the .448 mentioned above that Joe sells. I've tried Buffalo etc but have had no luck. Do any of you have an idea where I might find these?  Please respond online or PM.

RP and every one else who may be concerned. Dispite his ongoing problems Joe is aware of your order and has it in hand. Regretably  27" of snow has added to the situation and further slowed up the normal pace of events.

Richard,

You might want to consider running the PP'd .449 bullets through a .448 sizing die.    If need be (the patch is damaged) put a little sizing lube on the paper before you run them through the sizer.

Thanks! Sometimes the obvious isn't so! I'll try them on the weekend!

Richard,

One thing to look out for when you resize paper patched bullets with the patch on, over time the paper may expand as it is more elastic than the lead and it will probably absorb moisture.  The point being, if you set the bullets on the shelf for awhile you may need to resize them again before you shoot them.  As a minimum, I'd check to see if the stored bullets with patch have grown before I went shooting.

If you are lubing patched bullets before sizing you need to be confident that the lube isn't going to leach through the paper and stick the patch to the bullet. I role my patched bullets on the lube I use with my Minie bullets, before sizing. I have stored some for several months and not had any problems.

A variation on the theme of putting lube on a paper patched bullet before you size it is one that I have have used with push through bullet sizers.  Rather than lubing the paper patched bullet, I put Imperial Sizing Die Wax very sparingly on the inside of the sizing die with a q-tip.   When using a push through sizing die you can do this through the top or bottom of the die.

This method leaves very little sizing lube on the paper patched bullets.

Now here's a caveat.  I've only done this this winter and have not fired any of the bullets so treated, but with the lube on the bullet's paper patch being so minimal I can't foresee that the wax would ever be the cause of a patch-not-releasing problem.  Stanger things have been known to happen though.

I see no reason why you couldn't use any suitable (per David's caution) lube to do this.  So if the idea appeals to you try your own suitable lube and see if it works for you.

Thanks Pat,
I hadn't thought of that! Though my gunroom is dehumidified I now keep my pp bullets in one of the gun safes that is kept warm and dry with a Goldenrod heater in the bottom. There's no way those bullets are going to absorb one iota of moisture now!
