.461 Calibre George Gibbs Percussion Target Rifle. 35 1/2" tapered
round heavy barrel marked "George Gibbs, 29 Corn St Bristol",
and "Metford's Patent, 1011" on a 3" top flat at breech.
Bore very good. Plain lock marked "George Gibbs". Barrel has
some finish in sheltered areas, mainly a grey-brown patina. Some spots
of pitting. Lock, hammer and trigger guard are a grey patina. Fitted
with its original fore and rear sights. Very good straight grained walnut
half stock, chequered at pistol grip. Horn fore-end nose cap. Butt sling
swivel missing. Action strong. S/N 1011. A previous owner's initials
engraved on top of breech flat. VGWO&G-VGC. Complete with a bullet
mould
and false muzzle, both non original. In 1842 George Gibbs was at 142
Thomas Street, he moved to Clare Street, and then to 29 Corn Street
in 1858. A scarce rifle not often offered for sale in New Zealand.
