Description
This gun
is serial number F435 manufactured in 1865. It is in fine condition
and is accompanied by its original sight set. The sight set has over
17 pieces including two complete micro-adjustable front sights with
seven different apertures, a rack-and-pinion rear barrel sight, factory
installed tang sight and one of the most fascinating stock mounted sights,
with built in spirit level, I have ever seen. The sights are serial
numbered to the gun and have been with it since it left the factory
in their original leather covered case. The lock on this gun reflects
the workmanship of a Swiss watch maker. It is made by Joseph Brazier
and is marked "Joseph Brazier Ashes". Accompanying this gun
is the original Whitworth oiler, nipple cleaning tool, screw driver,
sight brush, cleaning and loading rod, etc. Beyond belief is that its
original shooting log, which records the place, the date, the weather
conditions, wind conditions and sight settings for each shot it fired
in competition, beginning in 1867, is still with the rifle. The rifle
is in .451 caliber and correctly proofed 52 bore. The lock is marked
"The Whitworth Rifle Company, LTD" with a crown and sheaf
Whitworth trademark at the rear. The Whitworth trademark is also stamped
on top of the barrel. It has Rigby flats, pistol grip and very finely
checkered dense wood.
This rifle is illustrated
and described in "The
Target Rifle in Australia 1860-1900" by J.E. Corcoran.
