Catalogue Description .451 caliber, 33" barrel secured by three bands. Casehardened lock and hammer, full length checkered military type stock. Sights consist of adjustable globe front, rear barrel tangent sight, and longrange rear staff. The rifle was won as 1st prize and presented to "CAPT' A.G. BROWN" at the Company competition on "7th Sept., 1861", First Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, 3rd Western Company. A silver plaque is set into the lid commemorating the event. The rifle is virtually in unused, near mint condition. Fitted in it's Whitworth factory oak box with accessories and several other shooting medals. A "HISTORY OF THE FIRST LANARK RIFLE VOLUNTEERS" is with the rifle, published in 1887. A photo of A.G. Brown is found in the listing of Regimental officers. The rifle retains all of the barrel blue and casehardened finish. Superb wood, mint bore. This is considered to be one of the finest examples of a Whitworth extant. |
