The Story of CreedmoorBased around an article originally published in 1876, the story of Creedmoor is told from the founding of the NRA in America, to the establishment of the world famous Creedmoor rifle range and the first major international rifle match.

Having won the Elcho Shield in 1873, Ireland challenged the riflemen of America to a match to decide the Championship of the World. The challenge was accepted and the international rifle match of 1874 was held at the new Creedmoor ranges. This was the forerunner of the famous Palma Matches, still held today. This match generated a huge public interest in long range rifle shooting; although in America it was not to last.

Recent years have seen a growth in interest in long range shooting with muzzle and breech loading blackpowder rifles. The story told here will be of great interest to anyone looking for some history of this growing sport.

The original twelve page article is supplemented by nine pages of notes, adding historical comment. A further 14 pages of Appendices give a chronology of Creedmoor and the International Matches, transcripts of the original challenge and the Amateur Club's appeal for riflemen, team profiles, full results and selected target diagrams.
