The military Whitworth is no. C423. This puts it near the confederate models used in the US Civil War. The thought is that it is part of the same run but, was shipped to New Zealand instead. So far it would appear that we have about 15 or so of these things down here in NZ all originating from military usage.

We had tribal conflicts in NZ about the time of the US Civil War. There were several armies or militia operating in NZ and any one of them could have purchased the Whitworths. I have been unable to track down army records to date.

There is a small hole drilled on the lock side about 1 inch from the muzzle. I was once informed that that hole was how the army used to hang them on the wall of the armory. The hole has since been welded up and finished off.

For comparison I have photographed the original Whitworth with a modern made replica by Parker Hale (no. 665). Note that the original is snubnosed and has iron furniture as opposed to brass on the PH.
