900 yard Practice

11 March 2006

The LRR Branch held their first shoot of the season at Bisley on Saturday 11 March. The day long booking on Stickledown Range was for a 900 yard practice. Thermals, woolly hats and gloves were the order of the day - thankfully it stayed dry!

Wind picked up quite rapidly during the morning resulting in a stiff breeze and the conditions did not suit those using light (less than c530 grains) bullets.

Stickledown Range

Stickledown Range, Bisley, Surrey
Although not pleasant, shooting on such days does allow the rifleman to develop his wind reading skills which are essential for long range shooting. However, for those who wished to use the time to evaluate changes in equipment and loading it was perhaps not the best of days. Although somewhat calmer in the afternoon there was a noticeable dwindling of numbers on the firing point - perhaps it was the cold getting the better of them, or maybe it was the temptation of the Association arms fair in the Bisley Club House that lured people away…?
