Asquith Cup

1 April 2006

In recent years some smart alec suggested that a match for Enfield rifles be added to the Branch competition program. Events moved quickly and soon the LRR had a fine original shooting trophy from the estate of Peter Asquith and a new competition; the aggregate of 15 shots at 600 yards and 15 shots at 800 yards.

This year's match saw the adventurous souls with their Enfield rifles braving the elements at Bisley on 1 April (an apt date for the event perhaps!).

Once the down pour of rain had ceased around 8:40am the first detail shooters waded their way to the 600 yard firing point to commence the competition. The strong wind and large slow moving bullet did not make for easy shooting. Len Jackson and Phil Senior however, scoring 34 and 32 respectively, demonstrated a degree of mastery over the conditions leaving themselves way ahead of the 'rest of the pack' headed by Graham Player on 25.

The afternoon session on Stickledown's 800 yard range perhaps surprisingly saw some shooters improve on their 600 yard scores (not everyone though Len!). Brian Olding notably doubled his 600 yard score with an outstanding 40, and John Whittaker also scored well with 34. Three shooters, John Maddieson, David Minshall and Phil Senior tied on the next highest score of 22. The prized aggregate first place went to Brian Olding.

Shooting Enfield rifles at these extended ranges is a challenge and the modern day full-bore rifle targets used makes high scores difficult to achieve; nonetheless it is a fascinating trial of the rifle and marksman.
