1000 yard Championship

28 April 2007

1000 yard Firing Point

Shooters setting up for the 1000 yard match
The annual 1000 yard Championship took place on 28 April, once again on Bisley's Stickledown Range. This is a demanding 30 shot match, made even more taxing this year due to range space only being available during the morning. The event is normally shot morning and afternoon with shooters having one detail in each session - 30 shots in a single session calls on a lot of energy reserves and it is a challenge to maintain concentration for the period. Martin Tebbs, the Branch Chairman, elected to forego his own shooting in order to assist Mick Nash who had volunteered to act as chief range officer. It was thanks to their hard work and the excellent markers that the match ran so smoothly. Over 30 members took part, although only 28 score cards were returned!

Many of the long range events are now becoming mini-international competitions; besides entrants from throughout mainland UK there were three from Jersey, six from France, two from Holland and one from America. The moderate to fresh wind was pretty stable with only occasional gusts or lulls to catch the unwary, and the sunny spring day made it a pleasure to be on the range.

Scores in these long range matches have been steadily improving and competition for the top place tight - in fact this year both Phil Senior and Joe Hepsworth tied on the top score of 108, with Phil's four v-bulls just giving him the edge of Joe's two for first place. Daniel Personnic making his debut in a Branch competition was close behind on 104.3 for third place.
