Asquith Cup |
5 April 2008 | ||
|
The Branch held their annual competition for the Asquith Cup at Bisley on 5 April. This really pushes the limits of Enfield rifle shooting, being an aggregate score of 15 shots fired at each distance, 600 and 800 yards. The cold day with a strong head wind did not make for pleasant or easy conditions. Nonetheless some seemed to master conditions earlier than others! Jerry Womble got off to a fine start scoring 38 at 600 yards, closely followed by John Whittaker on 35. Ken Watson followed on 29, after which there was several shooters grouped with scores in the low 20s. A good start at 600 yards is essential, but all can be lost in this match with the 800 yard shooting as Jerry can testify! Top score at 800 yards was an outstanding 40.1 from Phil Senior, followed by David Minshall with a creditable 34.1. Phil's score was enough to bring him up from mid-field at 600 yards to match winner with an aggregate of 63.1. John Whittaker kept his shooting steady and with his 26 at 800 yards and an aggregate of 61 he secured second place, while David Minshall followed in third place with 56.1. The Branch's second new event of the year was a 900 yard Championship. Unfortunately the author was not able to attend the match, which was a very close run affair. Dave Craven scoring 51.1 won the match by just one v-bull ahead of Andrew Burgess on 51. Third placed was Rob Player on 48. |
