Volunteer Trophy

8 March 2008

The first Branch event of the season was a new competition for the Volunteer Trophy, held at Bisley on 8 March. The course of fire was 15 shots at 600 yards with a military match rifle. These rifles are open sighted military style rifles of .45 calibre and saw use in competition in the early 1860s, later being replaced by the development of the full match rifle. Due to their small bore size they are not permitted for use in military rifle matches, and they are seldom seen in free rifle matches unless equipped with aperture sights. The addition of this new event will hopefully encourage member interest in shooting original rifles of this class, or perhaps to bring out their Parker-Hale Volunteer or Whitworth rifle. Match winner was Vick Nock with a fine score 41 in a strong wind. Dave Craven was just two points behind on 39 and John Whittaker was third on 36.
