Irish Riflemen in America In 1874 a team of Irishmen famously travelled to the United States to compete at Creedmoor against a team of American riflemen. The match aroused huge public interest in long range and was a victory for the USA. Following the team match there were a number of individual competitions, receptions and a tour of the country, including a hunting trip. During this tour members of the team met President Grant and a young Cavalry officer named George A. Custer. On their return the Captain of the Irish team, Major Arthur B. Leech, authored a very limited edition book on their trip, its origins, preparation, the match, and the subsequent adventures. Today locating copies of this book on the second hand market is extremely difficult. Step in Precision Shooting. The editor of this US magazine, having acquired a copy of the classic work, has reprinted it in a high quality facsimile edition of one thousand copies. The book includes the full colour plates of the original, plus the fold out map showing the route of the team tour. The book is a must for anyone interested in the series on long range international rifle matches held at Creedmoor during the 1870s. It can be obtained from: Precision Shooting, 222 McKee Street, Manchester, CT 06040, USA. Phone (860) 645 8776. Fax (860) 643 8215. Bill Roberts Bill Roberts passed away around 1:30pm on Sunday 26 December. His funeral took place at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, Athens, AL., on Wednesday 29 December. He was buried, fittingly, with a paper patched bullet, file and piece of mild steel. Bill championed the sport of long range muzzle loading, studied the original rifles and had the engineering skills to build his own. He shared his knowledge and was a mentor to many. I valued my correpsondence with Bill and had the great pleasure of meeting him and his wife, Jimmy Ann, at the Long Range World Championships in 2003, held at Camp Butner, NC.
