Obituary: Bill Roberts

1934-2004

Bill RobertsOne of the great American champions of long range muzzle loading was Bill Roberts. He competed at the long range matches held at Oak Ridge, TN, since the series commenced, and had long had a fascination for the English long range rifles and the sport. In 1979 the American journal Muzzle Blasts published his article "English Long Range Percussion Target Rifles and Ammunition" and in 1999/2000 a series on "Long Range Black Powder Shooting." Some of his writings can be found in the Technical Reference section of this web site.

Sadly, Bill passed away around 1:30pm on Sunday 26 December, 2004. His funeral took place at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, Athens, AL., on Wednesday 29 December.

Bill, at least by name and reputation, was known to many of the MLAGB's long range riflemen. The GB Team to the 2003 World Championships had the pleasure of meeting Bill, his wife Jimmy Ann, and son Al. Others had already made his acquaintance in previous visits to the US.

A skilled engineer, Bill appeared to be able to turn his hands to most things including complete locks and swages for hexagonal Whitworth bullets. A warm man, he shared his knowledge and was a mentor to many.

Bill is pictured in the outfit that he will wear forever. He also has with him a paper patched bullet, file and piece of mild steel. One wag who knew him suggested that if on reaching the 'pearly gates' he finds them locked, it wouldn't take him long to make a key!
