Parker-Hale Muzzle Loading Rifles

by David Minshall

The Rifles
Serial Number Survey

In the mid-1970's Parker-Hale introduced their Volunteer .451 calibre percussion target rifle. This was later followed by their 'Whitworth' .451 calibre military target rifle.

Both the Volunteer and Whitworth proved popular choices for riflemen wanting to try their hand at target shooting with muzzle loading rifles.

The advert to the right is taken from a newsletter of the Muzzle Loaders Association of Great Britain. The advert includes details of an exceptional score of 96 achieved in the MLAGB 'Lockridge-Huppenbauer' event in 1977. This competition is the National Short Range Championship 100m reproduction free rifle event and 96 remained the record score for the event until 1991.

In addition to the .451 target rifles, Parker-Hale also manufactured fine reproductions of:

  • Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket
  • Pattern 1858 Naval Rifle
  • Pattern 1861 Artillery Carbine

After the demise of Parker-Hale, and since their '1st Generation' production, there have been associations with Gibbs Rifle Co in the USA and Euroarms in Italy. The '1st Generation' rifles are now highly desired yet confusion continues as to identifying the originals from the earlier manufacture.

I have been pulling together information on Parker-Hale rifle production for some time and collecting serial numbers in an attempt to build up a picture of numbers produced and when the variant generations appeared. Please can owners of Parker-Hale muzzle loading rifles complete the serial number survey form. All information submitted will be treated in confidence.

Some background to Parker-Hale can be found at www.parker-hale.com/about.htm.
