I am going to participate in the world champs in SA, but ran into a problem the other day. I am travelling with British Airways from Oslo to London and further to Cape Town. Here is the thing, the girl at the BA office called me and said I am only allowed to bring 5 kg of bullets and that is not enough for the match!! I tried to convince the lady that I was not bringing any ammunition at all, only lead slugs. She said that BA did not look at lead slugs as not ammunition, they was classified as normal ammunition and therefore it was a limit of 5 kg. How do other shooters deal with this?

I need 11kg of bullets, so what to do? I dont want the gyus at Heathrow to confiscate them all when I arrive to London.

I haven't flown with BA with my ML shooting kit; last time was with Virgin and I labelled all the bullet boxes 'Inert Lead Projectiles'. I didn't have any problems. This of course won't necessarily help you. I'm not going to SA this year so don't know what the British Team ended up doing.

During the early stages of planning and due to baggage allowances there had been proposals to ship the bullets out in advance, although there may not be time for this now.

Hopefully others with experience can advise further.

When I went last year to the BL shoot - with KLM - I took along 7kg of bullets - 200 (yes, a few more would be more comfortable...) for 7kg, no problem. Whatever BA is telling, it for sure isn't IATA regulations or SA limitations. I would launch another try at BA with the inert lead castings thing, explicitly confirming in writing that NO primer and NO powder are present. Another solution - if you're not travelling alone, put some in the luggage allowance of your co-passenger. If that is no solution, then take your mould along and arrange for a casting session, they have lead over there, and the SA guys are extremely helpful. FWIW, I believe 250 bullets should suffice if you don't get over-enthusiastic during training...
