I am very new to the world of LRML. I have been saving for a Pedersoli Gibbs, but came across a company that is selling a LRML in kit form.

Has anyone ever seen, built, or heard of this company's rifle? It is called an "English Rigby Sporting Rifle", and is offered by a company called Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply Co.

It looks like the kit offers what is necessary for the sport. I would be tempted to make my own rifle. I am curious to what the rest of you think. :-?

I don't have any experience of this rifle nor have I seen one. The topic has however been discussed several times on the LRML Yahoo!Groups (http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/lrml/) email list. The message archive can be searched by list members - "Pecatonica" brought up 112 messages.

Looking at their web site (http://www.longrifles-pr.com/english.shtml) the stock looks like it could have been a little straighter - the drop may make difficulty getting good cheek contact at long range (900/1000 yards), although cheek pieces of various forums can be used to overcome this. How heavy is the rifle - bullet weights of 400-500 grains are referred to. 530-560 grains are more common and I wonder if the rifle is perhaps not built with the heavier bullet and large charges of long range shooting in mind? You will also have to budget for sights.

Hopefully somone with experience of the rifle can post further.

Back in 2000 I built a rifle using parts from Pecatonica. At that time I do not believe they were selling a long range kit but they did have all the parts. I supplyed the wood which they routed to their Rigby pattern. All other parts used in the rifle were from Pecatonica except for an L & R lock and a Don Brown trigger. I owned the rifle for six years and it performed very well for me.

In my opinion there are two big drawbacks to their rifle for long range shooting. As David pointed out the butt stock has too much drop. Your head is well off the stock when the sights are set for 1000 yards. I had to make a pad to use when shooting long range. The second thing is the weight. Unless they have changed the barrel it is a 1 inch Green Mountain with a 1 in 18" twist. The one inch barrel does not provide nearly enough weight. My rifle weighed just over nine pounds and that is too light to compete with twelve pound guns. Someone mentioned in a post on the website that there was a problem with the breech because there was no seat at the bottom for a nipple. I never found this to be a problem.

The Pecatonica parts a of good quality and can be crafted into a very nice rifle but not for 1000 yard shooting.
