Hi from Spain , friends :

I�m going to buy a Euroarms Whitworth military target rifle , and I have some questions :
- Must I use a special rod ? I mean , by the hexagonal bore .
- It�s necessary to lubricate hexagonal bullets ?
- which powder meassure may be correct , more or less ?
- Can I use not only hexagonal bullets but also others ?

Welcome to this forum.

A hexagonal tip to the rod will help clean right to the bottom of the rifling and I would recommend you get/make one.

You can shoot paper patch or grease grooved bullets.

Typical loads loads for long range work would be 80-90 grains Swiss 3 or 85-95 grains Swiss 4. For 100m shooting reduced charges are also used. You will need to determine what is safe, comfortable and accurate for your rifle.

Most shooting in the 19th century with the Whitworth rifle was using cylindrical bullets. There is no need to get a hexagonal mould.

Thank you very much David , your answers are very useful to me . Over here , people use to shot 100 mts with 60-70 grains Swiss or Spanish ( very similar ) numbers 2 or 3 . In our national championship there is no more long ranges : only 50 and 100 mts . What a pity !!

Hi friends
some doubts before the final decision buying a Euroarms withworth Military Target hexagonal bore :
- some friends tell me that the other model with grooved bore may be easier to load ( they say hexagonal bullets are awkward to load) and more accurate. What�s your opinion ??
-A german friend told me about a Hege Model with a Krupp barrel , very precise shooting : have you heard something about it ?

I personally chose the volunteer with Henry rifling, supposedly easier to load and shoot - but the Whit should be capable of equal accuracy, even if a bit harder getting to work... FWIW, you don't need hexagonal bullet for the Whit, it will shoot round bullets as well, without any loss of accuracy (see David's reply). I do believe Hege has an upgraded model, with match barrel
Then again, if a match rifle is your obejective, wouldn't it be better to purchase the Pedersoli Rigby?
