Title: WW Greener made Martini's
Post by Carignan_Salieres on 03/03/05 at 4:56pm

I got this information from Graham Greener.
Approximate dates of Greener made Martini's.

Rifled actions from the late 1860s to 1967.
GP shotguns from 1922-1998.
Police guns from 1922-1967
EG shotguns-Egyptian Ghaffir Police Force, about 37,000 made from 1922-1938

thought this might be helpful to some.

A Question I have when referring to the Greener Martini action used in the Egyptian police guns, and other chamberings by various manufacturers throughout the world, is that they are attributed to W.W. Greener.  Although I am not exactly sure what relationship Harry Greener has to the famed gun maker ...though I'm sure there must be one.  But in any case the famed Greener Martini action was patented by Harry Greener, and was accepted on the June 15th 1922 with U.K. patent No. 181154.

David if you have anything on the relationship of these two, if there is one, is the W.W. Greener name attached to the patent in any way?

"W W Greener retired in 1911 to write one other book "Sharpshooting for War and Defence", and his sons, Harry and Charles Edward took over the business." From the historical database on www.internetgunclub.com. Harry gets a couple of mentions in the notes on the site.

I have found the following additional information: Harry was born c1864 and Charles Edward c1867. They are both listed as gun makers in the 1901 census. In the 1881 census, Harry aged 17 is listed as "apprentice gun finishing".

Hope that helps.

David

36 years ago I bought a near mint Martini Greener by my favorite gun shop in Genova (Italy) and after a couple of years I resell it to reduce my collection but I loved that gun so much and now you can help me telling what kind of Martini it was.
The bore was 12 gauge but the chamber was strangely stepped and from the breech block did protrude the firing pin plus two small sectors which would mate a cannelure in the case head. It was stocked up to the muzzle and the steel rounded nose cap did protrude a bit beyond the muzzle.
It has all the characteristic of a riot gun but chambered for a very unusual 12 gauge shotshell.

This is the Greener Police or Riot Gun.  The gun is designed so that it will not fire normal cartridges nor can its cartridges be fired in a normal 12 bore.  They were used in very many locations and my experience with them was with the Hong Kong Police in the 1960s.

I have just purchased a .22 martini action with the words "Queens Prize Winner"  in a banner and a large cup both engraved on the left of the action.
W W Greener maker Birmingham engraved on the right hand side. The muzzle of the barrel is stamped "AGP Parker Rifled" around the end. It has a target sight stamped W W Greener Pat No. 10555. Can anyone point me to any history please.
Thank you all.

Does it say "Queen's Prize Winner" or "Queen's Cup Winner"?

Either way, go to the following and you'll find a lot of information on Greener target rifles:

Thank you again,

I have been trying to find more information on my greener 22 conversion also.   I have scoured for information,  but it seems to all be very general and nothing matches this piece well enough to be sure of a date and make.  It is numbered in the 27000 range, has a straight stock, and the rear site is attached to the stock, about 2 inches from the rear of the reciever.  the site is marked ww greener and can be switched from a small hole,  to a smaller hole.   This rear site is another feature I am haveing trouble dating.  Also it has a short front stock, not the full barrel length.

Thansk in advance if anyone has more information.

If  you can provide a bit more information for us to help you.  You say this is a Greener Conversion.  So is it a Large Martini  Henry that has been coverted to 22 Rimfire?

Describe any markings.

Can you post pictures?
