Title: Swedged or swaged bullets. Post by A._Roads on 04/23/05 at 8:59pm Does anyone know of the title of a book that is about the swedging of bullets, I think the author's name is A.B. Hawes or Howes or Howel something like that, the note that I'm trying to decipher about it is in dreadful handwriting. Thanks in advance, Adrian. |

Title: Re: Swedged or swaged bullets. Post by A._Roads on 04/24/05 at 12:39am I've found the answer, it is Arthur B. Hawes & the publication from 1859 - "Rifle Ammunition: being notes on the manufactures connected therewith as conducted in The Royal Arsenal, Woolwich". Adrian. |

Title: Re: Swedged or swaged bullets. Post by dbm on 04/24/05 at 8:50am This rare book has been reprinted by Thomas Publications in the US at the bargain price of $9.95. Go to http://www.thomaspublications.com/details.asp?BID=161 for more information. There's references to other items on Enfield ammunition in the Resource List I maintain at: http://www.researchpress.co.uk/firearms/britain/enfield/index.htm David |

Title: Re: Swedged or swaged bullets. Post by A._Roads on 04/25/05 at 1:46pm Thanks David, that was helpful. I found the info on the Enfield Cartridge making especially useful, the paper sizes shown differ from those used after (April?) 1859, mainly the outer paper was longer, apparently making it difficult to tear thru 2 layers, the gummed strip came in with the shorter outer paper, but the cylinder paper also appears to have been much shortened as well. Regards, Adrian. |
