Title: Enfield Whitworths
Post by A._Roads on 05/12/05 at 11:44pm

If I have may details correct, Enfield made 1000 P/1862 iron barreled Whitworths, with 36" barrels.

The P/1863 Whitworths with 33" barrels, of which there were just over 8000, had steel barrels by four steel suppliers.

My questions are:

1). Did Enfield manufacture the P/63 rifles, are the locks on these marked to "ENFIELD"?

2). Was this the first large scale issue of long arms with steel barrels in the British Army?
Thanks in advance, Adrian.

The /63 Enfield has steel barrels by Firth, Cornforth, Berger or Whitworth. Only Whitworth supplied them already rifled and the otyher as barrel blanks.  The rifles were otherwise completely made, including rifling the blanks, at Enfield, the locks are the same as the /61 Short Rifle and all carry the date 1863.  The barrels are all dated underneath in the form e.g. 3/64 and the lastest I have noted is 10/64.

I believe these were the first group of steel barrels but I have seen non ordnance /53s made by Parker Field with steel barrels so marked.
