Title: Trade Label id help
Post by A._Roads on 07/03/05 at 11:20am

Hi all, a bit of a long shot this, but I'm trying to identify the maker or retailer of this label from the scrap that is left (pictured). It houses a Calisher & Terry pistol & for all I know may even be a label of theirs except I can't find one to compare it with. The name on the bottom LH corner is something to do with the owner (not sure what yet) not the gun maker. Any help or pointers much appreciated, thanks in advance, Adrian.
(hopefully my pic attachment link is successful!)

There's an 1858 Calisher and Terry advert illustrated in Bailey and Nie's "English Gunmakers".  This differs from your label and depicts a breech loading rifle in unloaded and loaded state.

I have't been able to find a trade label.

Hi David, Thanks for looking, Bill Curtis has informed me that it is in fact a "Bookplate" with family crest etc & therefore not a trade label at all. Just make the search more interesting I guess!  Regards, Adrian.

Yes, I saw Bill's posting on BritishGuns.net. Not something I had thought about before, the use of such papers to personalise cases. I learnt something new!
