Title: Help Identifying Military Uniform
Post by TomGrosv on 01/11/06 at 5:46pm

I have a great scanned photo in my possession of my great great grandfather in military uniform that I believe was taken in the 1870's. Thanks to your site I'm pretty sure that he belonged to the Gloucestershire Volunteer Corps. He lived in Newnham Gloucestershire (the reverse of his photo shows is was taken by a photographic chemist in that town) and was a tailor by trade. He was born in about 1826 so he was fairly old to be in uniform by the 1870's - but his appearance does appear to be of a man in his 50's (and his wife). I'd really appreciate if someone could take a look at the photos and confirm this information for me. It could even be a very rare photo!
Thanks in anticipation
Tom

I'll have a look at it if the detail is good.

Please e-mail it to [email protected]

The pictures referred to above follow:

The stars on the right sleeve are, I think, worn to show that the man 'has been returned as efficient five times in the annual returns of their corps.' This would indicate a service of at least 10 years.

The cap badge bears the numeral 20 which is that of the Gloucester RV and was their ranking in the seniority by establishment date table.

The stripe round the right cuff signifies Certified as Efficient and the stars each represent 5 years efficient (which did not need to be continuous).  The right cuff bears what appears to be a musketry efficiency badge but the class, denoted by the number of stars, cannot be made out.

The order of county presedence can be found at:

Re my last post - please correct mistype.  Right cuff has the Efficiency Stars, LEFT cuff has the musketry badge.

Many thanks for everyone's help.  With information given by people on this site, and britregiments on yahoo, I've fairly satisfied I know what the uniform that my gt gt grandfather was wearing and the date he was wearing it.  It's good to flesh out your ancestor's life as well - it gives me a better understanding of who this tailor from Newnham, Gloucestershire was.
