Title: Towlson
Post by ducks on 03/15/06 at 7:22pm

I am looking for info regarding Joseph Towlson of Marlborough, Wilts. He started his business in 1810,under his own name and also as I F & J Towlson. In 1829 he bought the business of Hugh McCara and moved to Newbury, Bucks. The business was sold to George E. Walker, a former employee of James Purdey. He traded until 1869. Any information about any of the above would be appreciated.

Pigot's Directory of Wiltshire, 1822 lists: Gunmaker Joseph Towlson, Kingsbury-street, Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Pigot and Co.'s Royal National and Commercial Directory, 1844 lists: Gunmaker John Fox Towlson, High street, Marlborough, Wiltshire.

and ...

Whitesmith Joseph Towlson, Kingsbury-street, Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Pigot and Co.'s Royal National and Commercial Directory, 1844 lists: Ironmonger Joseph Towlson, Northbrook street, Newbury, Berskire.

There was a Joseph Towlson (born c1808 at Marlborough, Wiltshire) living at Tonbridge Wells, Kent in 1851. He was an Ironmonger employing 6 journey men and may have been the son of Joseph Towlson (senior)?
