Title: Confederate Enfields by BSA Post by Bill_Curtis on 11/02/06 at 10:14am Check out this website for some exellent photos of a BSA contract arm. Note the breech flats, the Diamond C amongst the proofs and the definitive proof for .58. This style is new to me but I have just seen details of another like it with similar marks which include BSA contract and acceptance marks and was made by William Tranter (one of the BSA consortium). www.oldsouthantiques.com/os565p1.htm |

Title: Re: Confederate Enfields by BSA Post by Geoff_Walden on 11/03/06 at 9:11am Bill, The Diamond-C mark (along with the breech flats and .58 caliber) indicated an Enfield barrel made under a Colt contract for USA use. Colt had his agent in England specify barrels that matched the Springfield standard, hence the breech flats and bore size. Colt apparently later changed his mind on these guns, and directed his agent to dump them on the market. Some of these were later bought by Confederate purchasing agents, so some are seen now with Confederate markings. Regards, Geoff Walden |
