Title: Whitworth ramrod Post by A._Roads on 02/27/07 at 10:51am I was perusing Dyson's site & noticed that they reproduce a brass headed rammer for the Whitworth rifle. I was wondering if the military P/62 or P/63 Whitworth's had these brass headed rammers? The reason I ask is because I have a brass headed rammer (pictured below) on a Calisher & Terry rifle, which I think does not belong - and I was wondering if it is originally from a Whitworth? Title: Re: Whitworth ramrod Post by Bill_Curtis on 02/27/07 at 11:17pm Adrian Small bore brass or gunmetal jagged heads like this, both with and without slots, can be found on quite a lot of the Volunteer type small bore rifles although I have only one noted as being on a Whitworth. The rarity of one in the 600 we know suggests to me that it may have been a contemporary replacement. What is the length of yours - 33 or 36 inches ? |

Title: Re: Whitworth ramrod Post by A._Roads on 02/28/07 at 4:30am Hi Bill, Thanks for replying. I think it is most likely a volunteer rod then, perhaps it is correct after all to the C & T, I rather hope so. One in 600 sounds like a long shot indeed, Dyson on his website says that he make these from an original Whitworth rod that he has, is this by chance the one that you refer to? I should have remembered that the P/62 & P/63 Whitworth's had a seperate cleaning jag anyway. I am unable to answer your question exactly about my rammer's length, as I have only recorded the barrel at 33.5 inches, so I assume that it is 33 inches long but am away from home at present & can't double check. Thanks, Adrian. |

Title: Re: Whitworth ramrod Post by Bill_Curtis on 02/28/07 at 9:58am Adrian Your C&T looks like a .577 from the size of the barrel and the /56 type bayonet bar but the rod is small bore - or am I seeing things ? |

Title: Re: Whitworth ramrod Post by A._Roads on 02/28/07 at 11:07am Hi Bill, Good question, when I get home in a few weeks I'll be able to measure it properly. The C & T is stamped 30 bore, what is that in inches?? And whether the rod suits .45 or thereabouts will be a point of interest, it looks like it may do from the pic. Nothing wrong with your eyes! Adrian. |
