Title: Made by Clive ?? Post by A._Roads on 06/23/07 at 11:22pm A friend of mine has two commercially made guns, one a snider the other a percussion 8" lancers pistol, and apparently on the underside of both barrels is "MADE BY CLIVE". I have seen barrels with "JOHN CLIVE" on them & I'm vaguely aware that a John Clive and a Henry Clive were contractors used by the Govt but I know little beyond that. Is anyone able to shed any light on who the maker is that used "MADE BY CLIVE" for my friend? Adrian |

Title: Re: Made by Clive ?? Post by Bill_Curtis on 06/28/07 at 9:03pm This is one of those cases where a very full detailed description is necessary including every mark and preferably photos as well. An idea of the provenance will help. I have my suspicions but would need to see the evidence. Hovering over my mind is a suspicion that these might be modern Indian. The Clives do not get much past around 1870. |

Title: Re: Made by Clive ?? Post by A._Roads on 06/28/07 at 11:31pm Hi Bill, Next time I catch up with him I'll take a digital camera along. I think he is too astute a collector to have ended up with Indian made "knock offs" but I also found the "Made by Clive" description very odd & pointedly asked him to confirm the exact wording to me when we discussed the items. Adrian. |
