MLAIC World Long Range Championships
Host Nation: United States

USIMLT

The United States International Muzzle Loading Team (USIMLT) has hosted the World Long Range Championships twice, 2003 and 2009. The venue for each Championship has been Camp Butner in North Carolina.

Camp Butner

Camp ButnerThe site of the National Guard Training Ground of Camp Butner, North Carolina, was acquired in 1942 for the training of infantry divisions and miscellaneous artillery and engineer units. It was named in honour of Major General Henry Wolfe Butner, native of Surry County, North Carolina, who died in March 1937 after a distinguished military career.

Today Camp Butner operates the following ranges:

  • Composite Pistol Range - 50 firing points and automated computer controlled 25yd line.
  • Record Fire Pistol Range - 10 lane, computer controlled and scored.
  • Zero/NBC/Night Fire Range - 25 point, automated computer controlled for night fire.
  • 1000 yard Known Distance Range - 50 firing points with motorized pits.
  • Zero Range - 32 firing points
  • Record Fire Rifle Range - 16 point automated computer controlled and scored.

New 900yd pointWhile the facility did have a 1000 yard range there were some problems that needed to be overcome in order to stage the championships, i.e. it had neither 500 yard nor 900 yard firing points. Thanks to the support of the National Guard, and in particular Lt. Col. Feagle, Com. Sgt. Maj. Foster and their staff, these firing points were constructed in time for the Championships. With the firing points on progressively higher mounds as distance to targets increased this was actually quite a significant feat. The accompanying photograph shows the water-filled hole left in front of the 1000 yard firing point by the excavation for fill material to be used in the new firing point construction.

Previous moves to have the new firing points constructed had been unsuccessful. Now, thanks to the MLAIC event US Palma team members who currently train at the facility, and other civilian marksmen, can make full use of the ranges.
