Rigby Hardware
Jul 23rd, 2007, 9:13pm

I have acquired the following hardware for the LR rifle I am building. It is supposed to be taken from an original Rigby rifle. Notice that it has the left side of the breech is rebated from behind the barrel to the tang. So far I have only been able to find this feature on Whitworth rifles.

What I am interested in are close-up pictures of a Rigby or other rifles with this feature so that when I get ready to inlet the barrel and tang, I have an idea of what it's supposed to look like.

You will also notice that the buttplate has provisions for attaching a back sight.

Hello, i can confirm that the castings you have are correct for the later pattern of Rigby ML Match Rifle.
This was common on Gibbs Metford also. I think they did this to leave more wood at the breech as this is a weak point.
I have an original rifle of this pattern and i am at this time building exact copies of this rifle with cased sights and false muzzle.
If you would like to write to my email address i will see what i can do to help you.

Dave,
I build a rigby metford gibbs rifle all by my self.I took the parts from the most known riflemakers from the old days and build these together. It was a lot work. All the parts except for the breech and tang where made from solid steel.Herewith i hope you have an idee how it would look after finish your one.

Hello Leon Smiley

That is a beautiful rifle.  Did you do the checkering?

Hi Collin,
No, the engraving and the checkering is don by a former worker of the FN factory Leige.

Leon,
I appreciate the pictures and hope mine will look as good when finished. I am also building mine from scratch and will do everything except for required machining of the tang/breech/barrel. I have a nice piece of crotch walnut. I can do the checkering and engraving myself. English style engraving will be a new challenge, as I build American longrifles. Here are some that I have done in the past:

Nice work Dave.  Sure wish you had made it to Iowa last weekend.  You missed a good time.

FWIW,
I had the opportunity to handle 451kr's rifle last weekend - suffice to say he had to wipe off the drool afterwards...  The rifle is just gorgeous, down to the little details.  Unfortunately he is bigger than I am, so I couldn't bully him out of it! Wink  If it shoots as well as it looks, it should do extremely well indeed.  And I know for a fact that he most certainly is capable of putting it to good use, after all he trounced me at the match....   cry
