Round ball for 200yd bullseye?????
Aug 11th, 2007, 1:32am

I have a old Thompson Center Pennsylvania Hunter with 1-66 twist that is very accurate 1" @ 100yds, We have a friendly competition @ our local club for shooting 200yds. My question is this, Will this rifle perform @ 200 yds? Or am I asking that 185 grain ball to do an awful lot? undecided
Every one else is useing Inlines (some pretty expensive) I have asked them to have a Sidelock division and limit it to only open sights. Still waiting for the answer. Angry

Not familiar with the rifle and don't know bore size. Round ball would I guess be rather susceptable to wind drift at 200 yards. The British Deer Rifle or Ounce Rifle of around 16 bore (.66") is used by some for 200 yd shooting in the UK - how much the heavy ball improves accuracy over small calibres I don't know. If you have opportunity to try shooting at 200yds, give it a go! Smiley

Hello, Cheesy

Are the open sights on your rifle fixed or adjustable?  We used to shoot a round ball match at our club which consisted of five shots at a steel ram target at 200 yards.  With good conditions it was possible to hit the ram with some regularity.  The fixed sights on our rifles required that you hold quite a bit over the target which made getting a good sight picture impossible.

If your sights are adjustable you should be more able to hit a ram size target at 200 yards more easily.  The rifle will certainly not shoot as tight at 200 yards as 100 yards but it should to okay.

Good luck.

The lead ball I'm useing is .495"(50caliber) with a .015" pillow ticking patch over a 50 caliber bore button over 80grains Goex FFF. I can and do hit a 12" dinger plate @ 200 yds, but have never tried for a group.
The sights are adjustable and the rifle was made by a company in America, "Thompson Center"
This rifle has a 31" barrel and is half stock. It is only a special order rifle now and can only be ordered with a flint lock, Mine is rare. It is a percussion and is 20+ years old.

I seem to recall reading recently that back in the day there were 200 yardish competitions with round ball guns.  As posted previously, calm is good, wind would be the devil's doing.  Whyn't you give it a try and see what happens.  You might teach those boys a thing or two. Wink  Only person that could be disappointed is them....

Hello Digital Dan! You on Handloads.com too?
I will give it a try next month hopefully. I will not be disappointed. I have been happy with this rifle since I first shot it, It has performed far above any expectations I ever had.
