Sights fot the Whit
Oct 27th, 2007, 12:54pm

Ok , finally the Whit its into my bag ! Or it will be better to say it will be... in a couple of Months!!
It will arrive with open sights , and I wonder which rear and front sights will be the best .
People talk about Dr Goodwin..or may be one of the Dixie catalog , but... which one ? And for the front sight?
Thanks one more time

The Goodwin sight is adjustable for windage as well as elevation, while some people prefer to have their windage adjustement on the front sight. There are some amny variations available and I am sure so long as you buy quality they will all function as well as one another.

Some points to consider; do you want an adjustable aperture for the rear sight, how readily available are the front sight elements, windage adjustment on fore or rearsight, how will you mount the rearsight on the rifle stock?

Well , I have understood you need more data in order to advise...
First of all , as Ive said in other post , we only shot 50 and 100 mts ( very eventually 200 mts ) over here , so , windage adjustements may be unnecessary... or only to learn how to do it for the future ( Im planning to organize a MLLR shotting  over here , Madrid- Spain during next year...).
Adjustable aperture for the rear sight? If I must be honest , I dont know what is this for... May be necessary for 100 mts range ?
I think I would need a rear and front sight for 100 mts able to serve for more...in the future.
David , will be try your patience if I request some photos or diagrams showing what kind of targets you use in 600 and 1000 yards competitions , and what scoring system you utilize ?
I hope Im not becaming a nightmare !!!   embarrassed
Thank you very much indeed

The adjustable aperture is just that; typically the rearsight will have a disc fitted that can be rotated. The disk has a number of varying size holes (apertures). By increasing or decreasing the aperture size you can set the sight to suit your eyes and the prevailing light conditions so that the foresight remains in focus.

The targets used for MLAIC international competition (and for LR shooting in the UK) are the standard NRA ( GB ) targets. You can find dimensions on the MLAGB web site. International rules are on the MLAIC web site.

After obtain some more information about sights for long range , Im on the point of decide myself about the Pedersoli USA 446 . the price and features make me think it will be a reasonable choice : moreover , according his web site  that sight its included placed in the Gibbs Rifle .  But I have a doubt , you can just imagine it !!
Some people tell me that sometimes , if the sight its no so good , when you try to screw a quarter of turn , or a half or a complete turn , for example , the spring its no enougth tight and it doesnt works . Only start to works at the second or third turn . If you didnt notice , then you think youve just corrected the windage ( for example ) and the truth its that you didnt .
Someone have used the pedersoli USA 446 and knows if got this problem ??
Thanks

Another problem with that sight on a ML like the Whit is that you will need an elevated front sight just to be able to hit at 100 - i.e. the front sight will have to be mounted on a tall block.  This is one of the reasons the Dr. Goodwin is so popular on these rifles:  It can be adjusted low enough down with a standard-size front sight.  And yes, I do have an acquaintance who also complains about his Pedersoli soule sight being a pain you-know-where to adjust for windage...
