Gibbs tang and sidelock cleaning... (Read 203 times)

Etienne_Brule LRML Newbies Posts: 15	Gibbs tang and sidelock cleaning... Nov 17^th, 2007, 5:44pm Hi, As a new owner of a Gibbs 45, I would like to know what to clean... I cleaned the nipple and the bore with hot soaped water, Brake Cleaner, then Ballistol. Should I need to take out the tang and the sidelock to clean them ? What is the best way to clean those two parts ? Thank you for the attention. Gerald Bergeron

Do look at the hammer face though. Depending on use, and maybe only annually or every 6 months or so, check the lock for loose screws and give it a light oiling. David

Hi JustMike,

I have always use Break Cleaner on all my guns, smokeless and BP. After the hot water washing, it is jus wonderful and evaporates without any residue.

Is there something different about the Gibbs ? What would you suggest ?

Reply #5 - Nov 19^th, 2007, 7:58am Its not the Gibbs which is different, its the brake cleaner which can be very aggressive to some metals. As for my cleaning a good wipe with ballistol untill the patches come out clean works well. I never intentionaly put water anywhere near any of my guns, least of all hot water.

I wonder if he is actually using the automotive chemical known as "brake parts cleaner"; or, if he is using cleaning products made by "Break Free" which are specially formulated for guns. Dave
