Long range sight ideas
Dec 21st, 2007, 7:28pm

Gert and I have talked about this but I thought I would see what other ideas are out there.

What long range vernier sight would you suggest for a Martini Henry action rifle? Gert go ahead and put your ideas out for the discussion.

Brent, does that go through the hinge block hole? Can you tell me more about that sight?  What is it?

That is a Dr. Goodwin-style tang sight, 2 people are currently making one - Rex Holbrook and ron Snover.  And yes, it might just be a requirement to get the sight low enough for short-range shooting...
This is the better one (it has the vernier plate), the BL model from Rex Holbrook:

This one has minimal interference with your thumb, as it is attached from the other side - and has adjustable angle (the normal one doesn't)
Although maybe the Lee Shaver Pedersoli Gibbs soule sight might just work - if the barrel doesn't interfere with your thumb.

This issue is finding a sight that will come down low enough, and at the same time not interfere with your thumb, which can be quite delicate indeed...  FWIW, here a pic of my match martini in #2 Musket with the 'ordinary' holbrook tang sight; sight set for 78 meters - my thumb barely clears the little screw on the side of the sight, if you have meatier hands, you just might be unlucky:

In this case, the hinge bolt goes through a hole machined completely through the "action" - an underhammer action made from a solid piece of steel.  You would want to customize the way you attach it to your rifle.  I will be changing it a little to use on my Don Brown .45 muzzleloader that is under construction.  It could be made to use with a more conventional base like Goodwins as well.

It was made from several different sights that were scrounged off of ebay.
