Whitworth lockplate markings
Feb 10th, 2008, 7:06pm

I recently saw what appeared to be an original Whitworth which had an Enfield marked lockplate instead of the usual Whitworth marked lockplates. The lockplate was marked "Enfield" with the crown over VR and dated 1863. The rifle also had a bayonet stud for the 1858 pattern sword bayonet. The barrel is definitely a Whitworth rifled barrel. Has anyone seen this variation before?

It may be an Enfield Pattern 1862 Whitworth Trial Rifle. Do you have any more information; barrel length, serial numbers, private or public collection or even pictures?

Unfortunately I don't. The rifle is in a private collection.
