Sorry no news yet...with the weather we've been having leately the last place I've been wishing to spend time is the range.

As soon as I get back out with it I'll post an update asap.

Well after a few frustrating outings...I've ended up placing some card under the breech end of the barrel so that the hook is pushed up tight and in noway can move at all....instant cure.  Not sure how long it will last but it seems to be working well...The eights have gone and 9's & 10's are quite normal again.

At least you seem to have identified the problem; that's the hard part. All you need do now is come up with a permanent fix! Smiley

That's the trick isn't it...a longer term fix...I have seen one done with wood shims.

Glass bedding is out....someone suggested wood pate...Not sure what that would actually be called in english...pat de bois hear...but I guess that's not technically legal bedding either?

Stick some veneer in there - that will work and is period-correct.

Is it ok to actually 'stick it in' as in use glue or will that fall foul of the rules? Roll Eyes

How about some "hide glue" intead of epoxy. I think hide glue is period correct. It was recommended to me but I have never used it (yet). It's not suppose to be overly hard to workwith, but it is more difficult than the two-part epoxy stuff.

Maybe David could comment on the acceptability of hide glue and how well it works. Hopefully, if he hasn't used it he will know others who have.

If you are interested in learning more about hide glue google "Using Hide Glue" and "Behlen Ground Hide Glue" .

Those searched should yield two sites athat will give you instructions and a product name.

Yet another google search would be "I'll stick with hide glue".

The following on 'Bedding the Parker-Hale' may offer some guidance.

The bit thats loose is the metal in the tang and breech, not the bedding in the stock. The cause is the tang/breech wearing because the case hardening wasnt deep enough. Packing the barrel up with wood and glue will not cure your root cause.

On my P. Gibbs the hook was .005 narrower than the hole in the tang---right out of the box. Brass shim stock cure the side to side movement. A shim under the breech to eliminate up and down and floating the barrel from the cross pin forward. Make sure the hammer does not hit the fence on the breech. Install a platinum lined nipple. Now you are ready for load development and loading technique.
