I recently found a press report of the fourth annual prize meeting of the Bristol Volunteer Rifle Corps, held at the end of July 1863. Apparently, in the course of the day a large number of ladies assembled in a field adjoining the rifle ground, and at a range of 100 yards competed with Prussian needle rifles. Just how common were ladies matches of this period? This is the first one I can recall coming across. David
