Ladies Competitions

I recently found a press report of the fourth annual prize meeting of the Bristol Volunteer Rifle Corps, held at the end of July 1863.

Apparently, in the course of the day a large number of ladies assembled in a field adjoining the rifle ground, and at a range of 100 yards competed with Prussian needle rifles.

Just how common were ladies matches of this period? This is the first one I can recall coming across.

Around 1864-5 there was a Lady Member of the Chislehurst (I think, or might have been Twickenham?) Rifle Club who competed shoulder to shoulder with the men in Long Range Any Rifle using a Rigby. She put up some impressive scores but I have never been able to find out her name, as being a 'Lady' she could not possibly risk her reputation by its appearing in print.  She features in a number of reports over the period.
