Following discussion in the Cornish-Enfield thread about patents, and for those researching British patents, the following sources might be of use/interest:

The 'Single Shot Action Patent Site' run by Gert Claes has a small but growing collection of data available. Includes Martini variants, Soper and Westley Richards.

'Abridgements of the Patent Specifications relating to Fire-arms and other Weapons, Ammunition & Accoutrements 1588-1858' was published by Holland Press, London in 1960, in an edition of 1000 copies. A useful resource but difficult to find now.

Armory Publications has available "PATENTS FOR INVENTIONS, SMALL ARMS, 1855-1930 - Armory Publications, 1993, Oceanside, CA. A case bound reprint in seven volumes, 8-1/2 x 11 inch, originally issued from 1904 through 1934 by the British Patent Office. Contains 7,980 abridgments of patent specifications relating to their Class 119 (Small Arms), worldwide." At $350 it is not cheap, but if some kind soul wishes to donate a copy to my library I would be delighted! Smiley

One further secondary source (again difficult to find I'm afraid) is Edward C.R. Marks "The Evolution of Modern Small Arms and Ammunition", published by Marks and Clerk, London, in 1898. This draws heavily on patent information, quoting from many as small arms development is traced.

Something to remember when looking for early GB patents.  Prior to 1915 the GB patent office restarted the patent numbering system at 0001 every year.  Thus you need to know the year as well as the patent number to find a particular patent.
