Do you have any dates this gun maker was working? I have checked in Bailey and Nie's "English Gunmakers" and not found him listed.

You could try the historical database at www.internetgunclub.com and there may be info available. At the time of posting this message the database is not available due to a site upgrade.

wish I did. All I have is a very nice rifle by him with no date. I can probably come up with an approximation based on the type of action (miniature greener) and cartridge (similar to .360 express). I will try the database. Thanks.

I have found Stephen M Patrick listed in the 1891 and 1901 census so far. He was born in West Heslerton, Yorkshire, c1839. In both census he is listed as a gunmaker.

In 1891 his address was 5 North Street, Scarborough, where he lived with:
Wife, Maria (40 )
Son, William M (18 ) - Gunmaker
Dau, Houner (13 )
Son, Harold (11 )
Son, Herbert (9 )
Dau, Maud (7 )
Son, Arthur (6 )
Dau, Edith A (4 )

In 1901 he is listed as a gunmaker on his own account and working at home. Address is 20 1/2 Aberdeen Wall.

His family and their ages in 1901 were wife Maria (50 ) and sons Harold (21 ), Herbert (19 ) and Arthur (16).

That's all I have found so far.

1881 address is 103 Westboro., Scarborough, which ties in with your original posting and dates it.

The 1871 census is interesting on a couple of points, his is listed as being a Blacksmith emplying 1 boy and living at Clarence Place, Scarborough.

In 1871 his wife is named Esther and aged 31, but by 1881 he is married to Maria (aged 30 ). Names of surviving children confirm it is the same family.

Thanks, David. This is just what I was looking for. I knew I had a kinship with him (blacksmith). He sure made a beautiful little rifle.

My next question was going to be are there any pictures!

I'd not looked in on the British Militaria forums for a few days, so thanks for the link. Sure is a nice looking rifle for a blacksmith!!     Grin
