Cartridge filling machine
04/25/05 at 1:40pm

The Royal Laboratory was using Caffin's Patent cartridge filling machine in 1864, does anyone have any information on when this machine was first introduced there, or any other information on it at all?  A long shot I know! Adrian.

I think I have a lead on this one, apparently Admiral James Crawford Caffin K.C.B. was Director of Stores for the War Dept from 1858 - 1860. I think it highly likely that the cartridge filling machine was his design.
Does anyone have a copy of A.B. Hawes book about ammunition?, if so is there any mention at all of the Caffin cartridge filling machine? If yay or nay that might help date its introduction.
It is a book I have to eventually order but my wife has put a positive ban on my book buying for 3 months, she curses the day I was told about abebooks.com.  Adrian.

Adrian,

You do know that Hawes book is reprinted now and can be had for about $10:00?

You can order it at amazon.

I'll see what I can look, but having just moved house I am still unpacking boxes....
