L.Co.2.V.B. The Queens Own
05/07/05 at 9:05pm

I would welcome any advice about a silver teaspoon I recently purchased.
It is hallmarked Sheffield 1902.
The handle is inscribed 'L.Co.2.V.B.  The Queens Own.
The bowl is inscribed Pte. R W Andrews.

I would guess V.B. stands for Volunteer Brigade ?
and I would guess 'The Queens Own' is the Royal West Kent Regiment ?
What does the L.Co.2. mean ?
Presumably this spoon was awarded to Private Andrews for winning some event ?

Thanks

Well we have the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) and the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. The latter only had one Volunteer Battalion, so I would discount them.

The 1st Administrative Battalion of Kent Rifle Volunteers was formed with headquarters at Blackheath on 12 June 1860. In April 1880 this battalion was consolidated as the 3rd Kent (West Kent) Rifle Volunteer Corps. The 3rd Corps was later designated as the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) under General Order 14 of February 1883.

L Company was based at St. John's.

So from L.Co.2.V.B. The Queens Own we have;

L Company of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).

If you have access to such, local papers often give details of Volunteer events at which your teaspoon might have been won. Most commonly these are for rifle shooting.

Do you have any pictures?

Thank you very much for your very detailed response. I am quite surprised at what can be gleaned from such a simple inscription. So I am rather pleased with my little item of regimental history.

If you would still like to see pictures I could certainly provide them

Thanks Again
