target rifles - what was used to win these events

Hi, its a badly worded question I know  Tongue
When browsing (I can't remember where) I saw a post showing when the Gibbs long range rifle started to become the main gun used by competitors in a particular long range event (again forgotten which one).
I'm not just interested in only Gibbs rifle. I want to know the order in which guns were used by long distance shooters over time - and thought results lists would indicate this.
Does anyone know how I could look up (for free & on the net - I'm in australia) the records which show who used what & where.
Or does this information come from a particular book, need to be compiled from competition records held by a club.
thanks for any pointers. ewan.

The year by year results of the Premier LR Match between England Scotland and Ireland lists all these.  This was the Elcho Match at 8/9/1000, teams of 8.  David has this listed and it gives details of all the rifles used showing the Whitworth which was replaced by the Metford and the Rigby over a period of two years or so.

Well I know I have some information on the rifles used in the Elcho Shield matches but it is yet to surface following a recent house move!

Presumably you have seen Corcorran's "Target Rifle in Australia" which covers many match rifles used there?

i have it on order <had to go to a regional library > and its still two weeks away.
i have an archery (not a shooting background) so i really am starting to look around with little idea or base to guide me. i like making arrows but you only need a doz for a year or so - making paper patched bullets looks fascinating and you have to do it frequently - very interesting.....
after i get a few books into me i'll start looking at places and people to talk to in sydney.
i'll probably chime in with a few questions that show little background knowledge so bear with me... Grin

dbm -very nice sites. i've enjoyed browsing them

I see that Booksnbits in Sydney has a copy for $100.00.  to, 223pp.
Interlibrary loan and a copy machine would probably be cheaper.
There is one here in the US for US$40.00.

Cheers from Darkest California,
Ross
