Old Rifle range at Wharncliffe,Sheffield, England

An appeal for historical information regarding the SHOOTING RANGE AT WHARNCLIFFE near Sheffield, South Yorkshire. England.
I have documented the site but there is very little written regarding its use. It is on land owned by the Earl of Wharncliffe who was Colonel of the Hallamshire Volunteers, formed in 1859. I believe the range was in use before this time but as yet unable to prove. The Wharncliffe family aready had a history of rifle use hunting around the world, with many American connections. They were Southern sympathises. I was told that this range is the oldest in the UK. It is falling into disrepair and one aim is to try and preserve the site. (stone butts)
Bullets at the site include .577, .45 (Martini - Henri) and Whitworth. A recent correspondent tells me it had a mechanical moving target.
Please bare with me as regards learning to use the site,
Thanks, Mike
