Unusual large .577 bullet?

Hi Bill,
An archaeologist friend of mine in New Zealand is trying to identify the large bullet in the centre of the picture. It is .577 calibre & 34mm long, and has a solid base. Any idea what it is??

It came from a frontier town in N.Z. which saw quite a bit of activity in the Maori Wars. It was found with other c1860 militaria. The town had a large garrison, the actual property of the find was owned by an officer. Speculation has ranged from a .577 proof bullet for proving barrels to an explosive bullet (some were used there apparently). Or a civilian gun perhaps? Regards, Adrian.

Hopefully one of these image links will work....
