Unusual Snider cartridge
02/09/08 at 8:54pm
I have this unusual Mark IX Snider cartridge with a copper insert in the nose of the bullet, normally the nose cavity was spun over with lead. I've had this posted on the bbritshmilitariaforums and thoughts so far seem to indicate that it is a commercial round. I've never seen one of these before & was wondering if anyone has any further information?
Thanks
Adrian

Adrian,
About time we had an entry on this site, been quiet too long.
This appears to be a Mark IX case but can equally be of commercial manufacture. The use of explosive tipped bullets weighing less than a pound in military small arms was banned by the St.Petersburg Convention in (I think) 1866. However, they remained popular with sportsmen and I have some examples and also some of the copper tubes ready to be inserted. These vary, some have a small amount of fulminate in the tip with the main body of the tube empty to suit the pleasure of the user and others are full and sealed at the open end with dark red sealing wax. I suspect that this is, therefore, of commercial origin and intended for sporting use.
Best Wishes
Bill
