1st Battalion Derbyshire Volunteers (rifle)

Having read a topic on the Derbyshire Volunteers, is it possible some one can help me with my quest for information concerning my G/G/G/father JAMES KING who i understand was the BANDMASTER of the D/R/Vs/BAND in the 1860s, I know this as i have news paper cuttings from the DERBY MERCURY 1867 & 1870 that make reference to concerts being held is his honour for his services to the training of Musicians for the band, i also understand 2 of his sons were accomplished musicains William & John who also conducted the Band
James was also a composer of Military Band Music, as i have discovered he composed well over 40 pieces that are held at the British/Library
James was Born: 1809 in Dublin  enlisted with the ROYAL STAFF CORPS in 1821 aged 13 as a Bugler, then went on to the 5th Dragoon Guards to act as BANDMASTER till 1850 when medically discharged due to injuries to his fingers, he settled in DERBY around 1855 till his death in 1888 aged 79 .

Would any one know if this Reg/t or BAND still exsist ??????

Would be most grateful for any info, that would further my quest for information with regard to the D/R/Vs & JAMES KING I also understand he was a Professor of Music !!!!!! thank you Redbert

Information I have from a privately published history of the Derbyshire Volunteers only gives scant coverage of the band and this suggests one was in existence in the early years but only for a short time (perhaps 1860-1863). I have one other original book from this period written by a member of the Derbyshire Volunteers but it is published 1860 and would pre-date your ancestor. Perhaps your ancestor was involved with the revival of the band?

Best I can suggest is to make enquiries via Derby County Record Office as to what records may survive. Sorry I can't help further.

I assume from this you have his service papers. Just in case not, I see they are held by the National Archives and the reference for them can be found by searching their catalogue.
