Whitworth lockplate markings
Feb 10th, 2008, 7:06pm

I recently saw what appeared to be an original Whitworth which had an Enfield marked lockplate instead of the usual Whitworth marked lockplates. The lockplate was marked "Enfield" with the crown over VR and dated 1863. The rifle also had a bayonet stud for the 1858 pattern sword bayonet. The barrel is definitely a Whitworth rifled barrel. Has anyone seen this variation before?

It may be an Enfield Pattern 1862 Whitworth Trial Rifle. Do you have any more information; barrel length, serial numbers, private or public collection or even pictures?

Unfortunately I don't. The rifle is in a private collection.

John Cornforth was a Sheffield based steel manufacturer may have provided the barrel as a roughly drilled bar.

You can't upload pictures directly to he forum, they need to be added to a photo hosting site and linked. I have added a note in the 'important topics' section in the general discussion forum.

If you have problems, you can email me pictures and I can post.
