If I have may details correct, Enfield made 1000 P/1862 iron barreled Whitworths, with 36" barrels.
The P/1863 Whitworths with 33" barrels, of which there were just over 8000, had steel barrels by four steel suppliers.
My questions are:
1). Did Enfield manufacture the P/63 rifles, are the locks on these marked to "ENFIELD"?
2). Was this the first large scale issue of long arms with steel barrels in the British Army?
