please help 1861 tankard

i have recently acquired a school of musketry quart glass bottomed tankard awarded to a lieut.col.vivian ( no initials) and eight named team members in 1861 at hythe as a 7th. section prize for ranges up to 300yds.named as the 4th.glamorganshire rifle volunteers. there are 4 marks a lion,snake,sword and the initals JE.on the item. is this pewter?

i am hoping you might be able to throw some light on its history and value.

I guess they must be worth between 100 and 200 pounds. Material is, indeed, pewter. Mine has no other markings.

Warminster will not have these sorts of records. What you have is one of a large series of prizes for small competitions held during or at the end of each individual Course of Instruction for Musketry Instructors of which there were several each year. These Officers and Senior NCOs, on the completion, of their courses, returned to their regiments (Regular, Volunteer, Militia, or Colonial) qualified as Instructors. The numerous tankards were. of necessity, of a fairly inexpensive nature.
